Hoodies for ‘Buddies’ at St Bernard’s

Oakmere Homes has sponsored special hoodies for PE leaders at St Bernard’s Catholic High School as part of a ‘buddy’ scheme to help build the confidence of younger pupils.

The scheme partners Year 11 pupils with youngsters from Years 7 or 8 to help pupils develop physical skills as well as self-confidence and self-esteem within physical education and their normal daily lives.

Year 11 pupils who volunteer for the scheme also gain the chance to develop their leadership skills, wearing the hoodies in school and at events associated with St Bernard’s to promote their roles within the scheme.

Ben Procter, Leader of PE at the school, explains: “The scheme has been running successfully at the school for a number of years, but the hoodies now identify the young people who have stepped up and are giving their time to help other pupils in the school, and setting an example as leaders.”

Oakmere Homes is building a new development of family homes at The Woodlands off Ratings Lane close to the school. Oakmere Sales Manager Emma Sanderson comments: “Access to St Bernard’s High School is definitely one of the factors that make the area so popular with families. We have seen a big demand for our new properties at The Woodlands, which also benefit from being next to open countryside. We aim to build communities so supporting local schools is a natural step for Oakmere, and we are proud to be part of the PE leader scheme helping St Bernard’s to develop fantastic young people.”
