Local Area
Kendal is an ancient town and dates back to the first century AD and has since been steeped in history and culture. Built around 1200AD, Kendal Castle once home to the Parr family, whose most famous member, Catherine, was a former wife of Henry VIII, the castle itself is a popular destination for tourists and locals alike. You can stroll around its ruins and enjoy panoramic views of Kendal and the Lake District mountains. Kendal Parish Church also known as the Holy Trinity Church is the Anglican parish church of Kendal, Cumbria and dates back from the 13th century and is recorded in the National Heritage list of England as a designated Grade I listed building.
Kendal’s more recent history has seen the rise, and fall, of industry, notably in snuff manufacture and shoe marking. K shoes, found by the Somervell family in the 19th century, were one of the town’s main employers. Kendal is also famed for the popular Kendal Mint Cake, which was famously taken on the trans-Antarctic expedition led by Sir Ernest Shackleston and also taken on the first successful ascent to the summit of Mount Everest by Sir Edmund Hilary and Tenzing Norgay in 1953.
One of Kendal’s best-loved destinations is the Brewery Arts Centre, which is internationally famed for its exciting programme of theatre and arts. Here you’ll find comedy, live music, workshops, cinema, dance and much more running throughout the year
As well as its enchanting surrounds and way of life, Kendal is home to some exceptional local amenities
